Park Chan-wook was being talked up as a surprise director nominee back when Decision to Leave won him the directing prize at Cannes. At minimum, the Korean master’s crafty homage to romantic noir felt assured of a nod for best international feature. But the Academy ignored him altogether, missing a chance to give one of the global cinema scene’s most reliably singular auteurs an overdue Oscars moment.

The past couple years saw the Academy begin to embrace East Asian cinema in a way it never has before. Yes, “Parasite” winning Best Picture and Best Director was the ultimate triumph, but the nominations last year for “Drive My Car” looked like it cemented the region as an Oscars powerhouse. Everything seemed teed up for the Academy to finally recognize Park Chan-Wook in a big way, a filmmaker that has been a favorite of cinephiles across the world since 2003’s “Oldboy,” but has never made anything quite accessible enough for even his home country of South Korea to put in contention for Best International Feature Film. While his neo-noir did finally get that recognition from Korea, coming out of an awardwinning run at Cannes last year, the film may have proven to be too stylized for Oscars voters, and therefore was not nominated at all.

We’re saving the best, or perhaps the snubbiest, for last. Few films were a staple on more critics’ Best of 2022 lists than Park Chan-Wook’s dazzling neo-noir, which won Best Director at Cannes and earned Chan-Wook a Best Director nomination from BAFTA just last week. After “Parasite” broke the inexplicable barrier that Korean cinema had been facing with the Oscars for their entire history, we collectively thought the shroud had been lifted, and one of the world’s most consistently wonderful cinema hotspots would finally start regularly receiving its Oscar due. But it was not to be this year, and even though “Decision to Leave” had been considered one of the top contenders in the Best International Film race all year, it ultimately proved too smart and elusive to even secure a nomination.
